IOERT has traditionally been performed by using an electron beam as the source of irradiation.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Today IOeRT, Intraoperative Radiation Therapy with electrons, is the only IORT technique included in the most relevant international guidelines for 9 cancer indications.<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Advantages of IOeRT technique for clinical practice:<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Improvement of local control is a key condition for disease free and overall survival.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Reduction (in the case of boost) and elimination (in case of single dose) of the external radiotherapy cycle.<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Time zero between surgery and the delivery of radiotherapy<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Precision, thanks to the direct visualization of the target<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Significant reduction of dose to healthy tissues<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Minimization of side effects, less toxicity, complete skin sparing and better cosmetic outcome when compared to external beam radiation therapy.<\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Feasibility of the treatment as the only solution when external radiation therapy is critical or even not possible (treatments of recurrences, patients with a pacemaker or decreased mobility).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">IOeRT boost is particularly efficacious for the treatment of locally advanced cancers.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_text_column\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6817\" src=\"https:\/\/mehreganpharma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/iort-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"790\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mehreganpharma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/iort-1.jpg 991w, https:\/\/mehreganpharma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/iort-1-300x152.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mehreganpharma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/iort-1-600x304.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mehreganpharma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/iort-1-768x389.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 790px) 100vw, 790px\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"IntraOperative irradiation (IORT) IntraOperative irradiation (IORT) refers to delivery of a single dose of irradiation to a surgically exposed tumor or tumor bed whilst the normal tissues are protected from the irradiation either by retracting the mobilized tissue or by shielding the anatomically fixed tissues.
